Multinational broadcasting firm Turner is a world renowned television and media company that has recently seen a huge increase in its footprint in the Latin American market. In 2017 Turner won a joint contract to broadcast Argentine football matches for five years starting in 2018 as well as a purchase agreement for television rights to Chilean league football.
Crucial to the success of these ventures as well as providing continent-wide legal support, Turner’s legal team in the Latin America region is based in Buenos Aires and is led by vice president legal and regional counsel Victor Roldan. The team has lawyers based in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico and the US. In Argentina, Roldan is surrounded by outstanding legal professionals including senior counsel Mariana Oteiza and counsels Jorge Bacaloni and Maria Perez Otero, with the latter two set to undertake a worldwide compliance responsibility from 2018. Magdalena Chiesa and Daniela Pisano complete the team’s Argentina based lawyers in the role of associate counsel and legal coordinator respectively.
Noting the team’s increase in workload during the recent past, Roldan explains the commitment of Turner’s Latin America lawyers and their drive to get things done: ‘Since we won sports rights in Argentina, Brazil and Chile, our legal department [has been] non-stop working during the week and weekends too, particularly supporting antipiracy initiatives’. Despite its international and cross-border remit, the Turner legal team is stacked full of local talent, and Roldan states he is ‘proud to have built a local department that [had] led the change of the international legal team’.
