Tülay Aktan leads the in-house legal team comprised of two supporting staff handling all legal matters for Efe rakı, a main producer and retailer of Turkey’s national alcoholic spirit, rakı which is popular across the entire Eastern Mediterranean and Balkan region. In conjunction with outsourced external counsel the legal team also handles corporate governance matters and is highly experienced with over 27 years’ experience. This experience helps with the preparation and application of procedures required for compliance with Turkey’s strict laws on advertising and selling alcohol. The team’s structure of collaboration plays an important role in its success and it continues to impress private practice peers. Aktan highlights that operating in such a highly regulated area has been a major challenge: ‘We are working on a slippery ground as the eye and control of the regulatory body is always on our company. We have learnt to become more commercially minded and created innovative legal solutions, whilst protecting the business’.
