Bankinter is a Spanish bank with headquarters in Madrid, and is listed on the Madrid Stock Exchange as well as being part of the Ibex35 Index. As a fundamental part of its growth strategies, the Bankinter legal team has been central to some of its core acquisitions, namely the 2015 acquisition of the Barclays retail business in Portugal, which consisted of 84 offices and Barclays Life and Pensions, in a joint venture with Mapfre. The legal team led this €175m transaction, in a plan to sell assets and cut costs. Director of legal Teresa Mota currently leads the Portuguese legal team, and has been mentioned by nominators for her part in this transaction: ‘She was part of Barclays and was crucial to the sale process to Bankinter, which she joined at the end of the acquisition process. She had to design and put in place legal solutions featuring high levels of complexity’. The legal team is integral to the legal activity in its network of 509 offices and 4,405 employees.
