Microsoft’s corporate, external and legal affairs (CELA) team in Spain is formed by five lawyers and three non-lawyers, and is organised around three functions – legal affairs, government and policy...
Microsoft is known globally for developing cutting-edge hardware and software technologies for both consumers and businesses. The vast global legal team is often at the epicentre of debates on new regulation and disputes surrounding the application of creation of new technology, as governments all over the world attempt to keep up with the fast-paced innovations. The legal team at Microsoft in Spain and Portugal is similarly market-leading, and has been able to support Microsoft’s expansion into new technologies in Iberia. Asier Crespo, legal director for Spain and Portugal, is described as having ‘an unusual breadth of experience and in-depth knowledge in technology law’ by one nominator. Using this knowledge he has often contributed to the discussions around the new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in Europe, appearing at many events and commenting in the media on the subject. Crespo’s legal team has adopted a comparable ‘commitment to business and society at large’, and has instilled his sense of ‘commercially savvy attention to detail and belief in the importance of the role of the law in the context of business’ across his team. As Microsoft continues to develop products such as cloud storage, the legal team in Iberia will be busy negotiating agreements with major corporate and financial institutions.
