As one of the largest telephone operators and mobile network providers in the world, and one of the largest companies in Spain, Telefónica faces a wide range of legal issues. The wider Telefónica legal team is widely regarded as among the finest in Europe, with its Spanish-centred operations standing out in particular. The legal team is led by group general counsel Ramiro Sánchez de Lerín, a hugely influential figure in Spanish law, though the team is also highly regarded in its own right and contains many of Iberia’s finest lawyers. One nominator comments that Sánchez has ‘demonstrated an extraordinary ability to lead the legal team of this Spanish company that has become a worldwide reference in telecommunications and technology’ and praises the ‘ability of the team to negotiate the purchase of telecommunication operators from different markets as well as the capacity to manage the very different and changing regulations in force in the different countries where Telefónica has set up businesses’. The team has also been involved in Telefónica’s recent diversification strategies, including consolidating its presence in the Spanish pay-TV market following the 2014 acquisition of Digital Plus, and helping to roll out new mobile services. As a cofounder of Spain’s first 5G technology laboratory 5TONIC, the company has recently entered into agreements to develop the provision of 5G mobile services in Spain.
