Over the last 20 years, Bob Kartheiser and his team have been involved in some of the largest and most pioneering power projects in Mexico. They are currently involved in the financing of over 1,600MW of new power projects, helping to add vitally needed power generation resources to the country. Kartheiser’s deep understanding of the Mexican energy sector has been shaped by his experience as an investor: he directed an independent power producer’s Latin American development group for six years, helping to finance and develop 520MW worth of new power projects. As a lawyer, his impact on the sector has been even more telling. Notably, Kartheiser represented the lead arrangers on the first two projects developed and financed under Mexico’s “self-generation” regulations, which allows parties other than the Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) to sell power to large industrial consumers. He has since acted on a number of energy projects under Mexico’s self-generation regime, most recently representing multiple lenders in the financing of the Ventika wind farms project, one of the largest wind farms in Latin America. Inaugurated in September 2016, the project will alleviate the demand on Mexico’s power infrastructure and work toward Mexico’s goal of having 35% renewable energy production by 2025. In another recent deal, Kartheiser represented multiple lenders financing the first cross-border wind generation project between Mexico and the US, a deal which involved complex permitting, import-export and land rights issues, as well as requiring litigation on both sides of the border. n
