Sanofi is a French global life sciences company committed to improving access to healthcare. Supporting the pharmaceutical, vaccines and consumer healthcare businesses of Sanofi Philippines, the legal team consists of country head of legal, Jazel Calvo-Cariño and senior legal counsel, Aiza Constantino. Whilst Calvo-Cariño is part of the senior management team and manages all major commercial contracts by advising management on legal and compliance risk assessment, Aiza uses her strong corporate background in streamlining the affiliate’s corporate governance. Calvo-Cariño explains that ‘the role of the legal department has evolved from being a mere contract management unit to a strong and effective business partner. The evolution occurred naturally, as the lawyers proved their value to the business, as well as through global structural changes that recognised and strengthened the independence of the legal department worldwide’. The Sanofi Philippines legal team gained recognition for being heavily involved in the global asset swap deal between Sanofi Group and Boehringer Ingelheim and more recently for their involvement in the various Dengvaxia issues that the affiliate has been managing following a global press statement concerning updates to the vaccine.
