As one of the largest public-transport companies in Singapore, SMRT Corporation operates bus, rail, taxi and other public-transport services via several wholly owned subsidiaries. It is a public transport operator incorporated in 2000 as a result of an industry overhaul to form multi-modal public-transport operators in Singapore. The company’s legal department oversee all legal affairs matters of the local and international business activities for the SMRT Corporation. The division is managed by vice president, legal and corporate secretariat Jacquelin Tay who has implemented a number of processes and tools to facilitate increased transparency, a shorter decision chain and sustainable pragmatic solutions to encourage new business opportunities. The department have contributed to the on-going efforts and expansion of business activities within SMRT, this has included assistance and negotiations on investments and joint ventures to keep up with the ever-changing public transport landscape in the region. The team have to stay on top of new regulations and models, such as the Bus Contracting Model, a new R&D effort aimed at improving transport reliability via the implementation of the MRT-NTU Smart Urban Rail Corporate Laboratory. Some of their most notable work includes their participation on the successful transition into the “New Rail Financing Framework”’ as well as the privatisation action by Temasek. Most recently the team have worked on a milestone agreement which will see Prasarana Malaysia and Singapore’s SMRT jointly operating a new cross-border MRT train service in 2024. Adding to its capacity of 10,000 passengers, the collaboration will provide an additional capacity of 60,000 users crossing the Causeway during peak hours.
