With substantial operations in Thailand, Myanmar, and Malaysia, Norway-headquartered Telenor has a major presence in Southeast Asia. The company is undergoing a period of expansion in the region, and the legal team of Telenor Asia has mirrored this with some exciting changes being made internally. For instance, former head of legal for Telenor Myanmar Øivind Burdal has taken on the reins of the Asian group legal department as of August 2017, and now heads up the international legal function for the region. This has coincided with some exciting developments in the company’s capabilities and service offering to its customers. In January 2018, it announced an US$80m deal to acquire additional 1800-MHz spectrum in Myanmar to improve its 4G capabilities in the country, while in December 2017 Thai regulators gave the go-ahead for Telenor’s Thai subsidiary DTAC to partner with telecoms company TOT in order to provide for the development of voice, data and multimedia service using the latter’s 2300-MHz spectrum. The Telenor Asia legal function has been instrumental to the successful conclusion of these projects.
