After an eight year career in private practice in elite Chicago law firms, Brad Burd moved in-house joining the then rapidly expanding start-up health insurance provider GoHealth in 2011. Burd serves as general counsel of the established national healthcare provider, whom he had previously served as outside counsel. An experienced litigator as well as transactional lawyer within the healthcare sector, Burd is highly skilled and knowledgeable on all elements of the highly regulated and complex industry. Burd has been with the company as it transitioned from being a start up into a more mature business, as signalled by the acquisition of a private equity partner in 2012. Burd highlights that ‘it taught me many things about what investors may consider important that may otherwise seem routine or mundane. I use that information to this day with every commercial transaction to consider how each provision of a contract or each compliance decision would impact our investors or potential investors’. In 2013, Burd and his team negotiated and signed its first agreement to build an ACA technology platform for a major national insurance carrier prior to the first ever open enrolment period. That agreement created the momentum to quickly sign many others, cementing GoHealth as one of the leaders in the health insurance technology space. He highlights: ‘Each agreement was somewhat unique, and going through the process forced me to be heavily involved in developing our long-term strategic goals and documenting our biggest risks. That process furthered my skills to understand the business challenges, take practical approaches that are not always the most risk averse options, and think about the general business needs rather than just the legal implications related to each deal’. Burd has ensured that GoHealth has been and continues to be at the forefront of the Affordable Care Act’s implementation and the handling of its permutations and alterations as the current political climate dictate. Burd’s management and development of the legal department including all of its systems, regulatory monitoring, compliance, litigation and transactional matters has been exemplary and his leadership has transformed the company and enabled its further success.
