John W. Hamlin
Chief counsel, employment, benefits and governance | Marsh & McLennan Companies
Graduating law school in 1988, John Hamlin’s first professional position was as a legal clerk with Judge of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Georgia Hon. B. Avant Edenfield. He then moved into an extremely successful private practice career as a labour and employment law specialist in Connecticut, with Wiggin & Dana of New Haven and Paul, Hastings, Janofsky & Walker of Stamford between 1989 and 2002. His in-house legal career began at this point, when he initially joined Marsh & McLennan Companies in New York. He impressed from the get-go, and quickly moved through positions, being made chief employment counsel in 2007 and chief counsel for employment, benefits and governance – his current position – in 2015. He has enjoyed a number of highlights during his time with Marsh & McLennan. ‘Working on significant corporate restructurings and integrations over the years has been an enormous challenge, and has provided me with insight on the importance of supporting and advocating for change in the business, while responding to employee concerns and helping the business implement new structures’, he says. ‘Also, it has been enormously rewarding to develop close, productive relationships across the business. I am convinced that my most important accomplishment has been to become a trusted and valued resource and strategic business partner and advisor for HR, employee relations, my business colleagues, and our leadership’.
