Andrés Eyzaguirre Larraín, general counsel and compliance officer at Nestlé Chile, is at the forefront of the in-house legal market in Chile and a highly skilled lawyer. At Nestlé he has introduced a series of new and recent changes to the legal department’s function. These include the introduction of new technologies in the internal traceability of legal consultations, monitoring of legal cases and repository of contracts and legal documents; and participation in the care of the integrity and corporate image of the company, mainly on issues of human rights and care of the environment. There is also now training support given to businesses in free competition, corruption, consumer and human rights by the legal team, which has produced an important behavioural change in executives and employees of the company. In terms of transactions, Eyzaguirre led the local acquisition of the Starbucks brand license for the distribution and commercialisation of its products in retail, outside its stores as well as achieved important judgments in terms of consumer product of the new labelling law. He was also involved in disputes in free competition in the dairy sector and disputes in the constitutional court for inability to contract with the state that have been significant in Chilean jurisprudence. In the words of a nominator, ‘Andrés Eyzaguirre is one of the most experienced, innovative and hard-working general counsels in the industry. He is accessible, creative and very easy to work with. Besides his unquestioned legal skills, he has worked hard in the implementation of sustainability in in-house legal departments, following the principles that are promoted by the University of Berkeley, Harvard and Universidad Católica (UC) in Chile. He has incorporated concepts like communications, advocacy, compliance, environment and human rights, into his legal practice. He plays an active role in shaping policies and environmental change in terms of diversity and inclusion at Nestlé. As a mentor and coach for programs at Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez, he has implemented legal programs of shared value, helping UC students with limited resources to graduate, find their first jobs, prepare for the degree exam and face their first legal experience’.
