Jorge Hirmas Bormann, general counsel Americas of ORICA, joined the company in 2015 as a legal counsel and has steadily risen the ranks to his current title by February 2019. He is a member of the North America and Latin America regional management teams involved with setting the strategy and implementing strategic goals from a legal perspective for the multinational mining and explosives company. He expertly provides leadership and ensure efficient and effective management of staff and resources in the legal department. He oversees all the legal affairs in the Americas region, ensuring that proper legal protection and risk management advice is provided to management as well as liaising with relevant departments to ensure that high quality, timely, results-oriented and cost-effective legal services are provided in supporting achievement of business objectives. He also oversees the corporate secretarial function, real property issues and transactions, government and community relations, and litigation management across the region. Hirmas Bormann has participated in the drafting process of several regulations, working closely with regulators in various countries of Latin America, including Chilean geothermal energy regulation, and explosives traceability regulations in Chile, Mexico and Brazil. He has led various M&A projects, both at law firm and in-house positions, involving multimillion-dollar deals and transactions. Implemented legal technology in Orica’s global legal department, contributing to make its processes more efficient and to reduce the amount of non-value adding work its members allocate to administrative and repetitive tasks. Hirmas Bormann has made significant contributions to contract lifecycle management practices at Orica and saw through the implementation of a collection of global templates aimed to standardise the company’s global terms and conditions, reduce duplication of work and provide clear contracting guidelines to the business.
