The central legal department of British American Tobacco (BAT) is based in Rome and is responsible for coordinating the strategic legal agenda of the local legal offices, responsible for business operations in Italy. Also part of the department is a team in Madrid, responsible for Spain, Portugal, Canary Islands, Gibraltar and Andorra and a team based in Athens that overlooks Greece, Cyprus, Malta and Israel. The central department is divided into three centres of expertise in order to provide the company with high-quality legal services in regards to litigation, compliance and contracts as well as commercial matters. In the last two years BAT has been faced with new challenges brought on by the launch of the potential reduce risk products, e-cigarettes branded as Vype, tobacco heated products, Glo and the modern oral products branded as LYFT. ‘These kinds of products represent a new era for our company with respect to the traditional tobacco business. To keep abreast of the times, the legal department updated its expertise, skills and professionality in order to face the new generation product era’s challenges’, says head of legal and regulatory affairs for South Europe Area, Andrea Di Paolo. In a highly regulated market, the legal department plays a key role in supporting and advising all the company functions. The legal mission is to shape, protect and secure BAT’s ability to compete in the transforming tobacco agenda, embedding the “delivery with integrity” philosophy within the company.
