Enel Italy
Taking charge of the legal affairs for Enel Group in its home market in Italy, a team of approximately 140 people including in-house lawyers and paralegal staff support the business in its legal activities. Led by head of legal and corporate affairs in Italy Giuseppe Conti, the team’s mission is to provide legal assistance to different group business lines and to manage legal issues and litigations in extraordinary transactions and corporate governance, ensuring the compliance with all applicable laws and regulations in Italy. In-line with the matrix model of organisation adopted by the entire Enel Group, the Italian legal and corporate affairs department consists of 12 legal units corresponding to different business areas and geographic locations in the Italian territory. According to Conti, this organisation allows the team to approach new areas of competence and achieve new views and innovative legal solutions that are extremely valuable for Enel Group. In a time of change, the legal department has proven their willingness to manage the change effectively and to embrace new technology. They have recently undergone a digitalisation programme with the idea to drive the digital growth of legal activities, to simplify and improve legal processes and to give a homogeneous overview of judicial matters at a global level. Conti explains that the main way his team has made a tangible impact is through their involvement in major decision processes, contributing proactively to all main transactions and business activities, consequently changing the perception of in-house lawyers within Enel Group. The specific cases where the legal team has had an impact include new renewable project acquisitions, biomass asset disposal and successful litigation cases in the field of trademark and environmental administrative proceedings. Furthermore, the team has taken on the critical role of Enel’s Italian legal team in the Futur-E project, a project in which the team continues to give constant support to allow the development and promotion of the conversion process for several Italian plants. Enel’s Italian legal team supports the business in the complex and articulated steps that must be taken for the company’s energy conversion projects within Italy.
