Rising Tide
The current legal team of Rising Tide consists of the general counsel Rich Magnan and paralegal Lilian Oberholzer. Magnan handles all legal issues for the group, some personally and others through external counsel, while Oberholzer handles contract management, legal administration, and docket management. The most important changes to the legal team in the last two years has been the team’s reduction in size and the reorganisation of the group’s business units. The reorganisation involved significant legal issues and according to Magnan, ‘the team performed superbly despite time constraints, complex issues, and their transition into new roles’. The reorganisation included, the sale of the intellectual property and transfer of the intellectual property management function to a new entity, the sale of two business units in Asia each with multiple offices in Asia and the Middle East, the transfer of the investment advisory business unit to an independent external entity and the implementation of a group-wide contract management system, as well as the expansion of both charitable foundations’ grants to new categories of recipients. The most significant cases that the legal team has recently been involved in include the development and patenting of innovations for cancer treatment, the development of new biotechnology compounds for cancer treatment, the development and certification of a new medical device, and the organisational changes mentioned above. In one sentence, the team’s ethos is: ‘we are dedicated to helping cancer patients and others in need’, says Magnan. The two charitable foundations are the core of this group of companies with improvements in cancer treatment and care as a top priority. ‘The team has performed well during this challenging period despite substantial changes and the need to continue providing a wide variety of legal services with fewer people’, explains Magnan.
