As a qualified tax consultant who formerly worked in tax for a number of years, Colin Fuller is well placed in his role as head of legal for Rabobank. Fuller...
Colin Fuller joined Rabobank in 2008 as head of legal and compliance. He highlights that, ‘the organisation [has] changed a lot in the years since, but is back to [being] very similar set to the way that [I] joined it’. He qualified as a lawyer in a general practice in 1999 and at the same time sat the institute of tax exams and qualified as a tax adviser. On the back of that he worked in a tax boutique, Warren and Partners, and then the tax department of two of the big five Irish firms, Matheson and William Fry. He then decided to move in-house working for four years in Citibank Europe in Dublin before taking up his current role. Qualifying as a tax adviser at the same time as a general practice solicitor gave Fuller a broader viewpoint of professional services, and as he says, more varied work. He adds; ‘Getting the opportunity to work in two of the big five law firms, as you experience such a broad range of work there and get to work with excellent people who set very high standards installs in you a focused work ethic’. Moving to an in-house role to use legal and tax experience more commercially, he states, ‘helps an organisation make decisions at an early stage and mould the way projects progress’. A highlight in his time at Rabobank has been structuring the award winning Milkflex lending fund, a flexible loan for dairy farmers.
