Italian government-owned company Anas is dedicated to the construction and maintenance of Italian motorways and state highways. Anas has a large legal team composed of 86 lawyers and 80 paralegals in Italy, and general counsel Claudia Ricchetti has restructured the team since she joined in 2015 by implementing a new organisational chart diving the team into geographic areas. Upon starting, for the first time in the company’s history a litigation proceeding surfaced, gaining much media attention. Thanks to the team this resulted in an agreeable negotiation and a successful settlement. As a ‘strongly motivated’ team Richetti considers the function a ‘part of the process of the new “face” of the company whose managers and employees have recently involved in multiple cases of bribery related to the public procurement process’. Some of its outstanding members include Eleonora Mariani ‘who gave birth’ to the new corporate department reviewing all the procedures related to coordination of subsidiaries, appointment of new board members in the subsidiaries and joint venture agreements abroad. One of the most notable transactions for the legal team was when they implemented the new procedures for the settlement of a first of its kind litigation proceedings whose value had reached €8bn in which the team scrutinised €2bn litigation proceedings in terms of value of the request of damages. This ended in four favourable rules denying the right to compensation for damages in favour of the counterparties, despite previous rulings in their favour.
