Founded in 1483, Banca Carige is one of Italy’s largest banks holding €26.1bn of assets. Made up of a team of experienced lawyers, litigation managers and compliance specialists, the legal department is central in every strategic move of the bank. The bank has faced a number of challenges with aims to offload €1.2bn in bad loans as the bank’s newly appointed boss works to comply with regulatory demands to shed debts. The legal function has been faced with pressures to comply with these demands, regularly monitoring and updating financial regulations, including at EU level. The legal team comprises of a set of individuals with extensive experience in banking and commercial law, overseeing the prepayment of the bank’s contractual business and it has gone on to play a vital part in the bank’s negotiations of complex financing contracts. Some areas of specialism includes securities acquired or provided by the bank, leasing, factoring and bank transparency. The team has also been central to the management of M&A operations including the acquisitions of business branches and purchase strategic assets. The team is at the core of the bank’s moves, including the management of judicial and extrajudicial disputes involving mediation proceedings and appeals to the banking and finance arbitrator.
