Made up of nine lawyers, one assistant and one trainee, the FedEx Italy legal team has been behind introducing the high compliance standard of FedEx into the TNT organisation in several countries. The legal team managed to set this up in nine months, with tangible results in terms of improvement of compliance awareness both by top management and individual contributors, particularly in countries characterised by high levels of bribery. The team is led by Alessandro Lega, managing director legal SEU, and is supported by international advisors Luca Galeandro and Maria Lopez. With its support the whole international legal team has been reorganised due to reallocation of responsibilities among the European managing directors for legal affairs, moving from a country to a functional based approach with the aim of building a 360 degree team of in-house international legal advisors. Lega says: ‘My team has been entrusted with the duty to provide legal support to both FedEx and TNT organisations in the entire Southern Europe region, inclusive of the following countries: Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Bulgaria, Croatia, Slovenia, Serbia, Kosovo, Montenegro, Albania, Bosnia Herzegovina, Macedonia, Malta and Cyprus’. The team is growing due to the increased number of countries under the teams supervision, and the function expects to expand the number of lawyers substantially in the next couple of years. Each member of the team is requested to give legally sound and business minded legal advice to internal clients. ‘In order to ensure this capability each team member is requested to make several trainings on quality driven management and coaching sessions with other functions (for example each of the team members including me must spend at least one day per year working with a courier, participating in customer service activities and getting involved in other departments activities)’. The Italy FedEx company has recently been tasked with opening a new logistics facility at Milan-Malpensa airport, aimed at meeting growing demand from Italian and European businesses and consumers.
