In 2005, an investment fund of Goldman Sachs acquired the cable businesses of Pirelli and formed Prysmian Group, now the largest manufacturer of electric power transmission and telecommunications cables in the world. The company supplies cables for projects ranging from rail tunnels to providing internet access in rural locations and has completed some of the most complex engineering projects in recent years, such as the Çanakkale II submarine cable link between Europe and Asia across the Dardanelles strait in Turkey. All of which creates a lot of legal challenges for Prysmian’s lawyers. Head of legal affairs Jacopo Zirulia oversees the legal function at the Milan-headquartered multinational. He is joined in the legal team by former Eni legal manager Carlo Carzaniga (legal affairs, senior counsel) and senior counsel Michele Binda, who was active in the listing of Prysmian’s shares on the Milan Stock Exchange and currently helps oversee, among other things, compliance and antitrust related matters.
