At a time when traditional pay-TV markets are becoming disrupted by online content and changing viewer habits, the still-growing pay-TV market in Africa is becoming increasingly important to media networks. For Fox Networks Group, the recently re-branded TV and cable division of 21st Century Fox (formerly known as Fox International Channels), the African market represents an exciting, if challenging, place to develop its content.
Led by London-based Mitzi Berberi, vice president and deputy general counsel and head of business and legal affairs for UK, France and Africa, Fox Networks Group has assembled a team of media lawyers that have won widespread praise for their work across Africa. The team has been instrumental in facilitating Fox’s market-expansion strategy, helping to protect the company’s content while counselling on the viability of new distribution platforms. Fox’s footprint in Africa is wide, though its main business remains channel distribution in South Africa and Kenya. However, recent years have seen Fox partnering with Nigeria-based pay-TV channel Montage, a significant player in the West African media market, and launch its Fox Movies brand across the region. By backing the company’s content over such a culturally and legally diverse region, the legal team has earned its reputation as one of the leading media outfits in Africa.
