Morgan Lundberg
Legal director | Klarna Bank
Morgan Lundberg began his in-house career at IT company Oracle in 2007 after a decade of competition legal work in the public sector, where he mainly focused on M&A and antitrust issues. Undertaking a managerial position within contracts and business practices at Oracle, Lundberg managed a team of professionals in the Nordics and Benelux regions. After a position within the security and defence industry with Saab Dynamics as a legal advisor, he joined Swedish bank Klarna almost six years ago, where he has since held various positions including group general counsel, before becoming legal director in February 2018 and being the lead lawyer for an innovative and autonomous product development domain within Klarna. He is well versed in competition and regulatory law, contract law, IP law and privacy law including recent GDPR. He expertly manages legal projects and problem solves, working with internal and external counsel as well as non-legal stakeholders throughout the business. During his time at Klarna, first as general counsel and now as legal director, he has successfully led Klarna’s work to become authorised as a bank, which he says gave him ‘invaluable insights into financial regulatory law in practice and how it can be aligned with business needs’. He has built up a global legal function dedicated to delivery of business minded legal advice at a balanced risk level, which gave him ‘the opportunity to practice change management and leadership in a fast-paced innovative and heavily regulated business environment.’ He has also been involved in contracting and negotiating multi-million dollar deals in the security and defence sector, making him juggle with a wide range of legal disciplines in a demanding international business environment. Lundberg, speaking about his leadership identifies problem solving as a key part of his job. He says: ‘In my current role, I strive to set an example by melting legal advice into all phases of product development, providing legal advice as an instrument to facilitate innovative services and problem solving. I see it as a continuation of my prior role in which I built up a multinational legal department where legal problem solving and product development is in the DNA of all Klarna lawyers. I hope my work has inspired Klarna lawyers to be business enabling problem solvers, not merely risk mitigators as an in-house counsel, be a problem solver and you’ll be successful’.
