Åsa Thunman joined Sandvik in 2014 as executive vice president and general counsel, bringing with her extensive experience in the engineering sector gained in several previous positions. She began her legal career in private practice at the Lagerlöf & Leman law firm in 1996, moving in-house three years later to undertake a role at Elekta, where she stayed for ten years before joining Securitas in 2009, and then Scania between 2010 and 2014. Sandvik is a global technology engineering group making tools and tooling systems for metal cutting, technical solutions for the mining and construction industries and advanced stainless steels and special alloys. In 2017, the Sandvik organisation had 43,000 employees, and made SEK91bn in revenue through its operations in more than 150 countries. In May 2018, Sandvik announced a new digital partnership with IBM to develop software technology to enhance mining exploration capabilities, and to increase data driven productivity and predictive technology to improve performance. Thunman has the experience and know-how to contribute important insights into deals like this and others, including commercial contract, regulatory and labour matters, helping to achieve the business agenda of the company, and helping it innovate to keep it competitive. Thunman is also a member of the board of directors of the Sweden China Trade Counsel, proving her ability to provide a pronounced understanding into important cross-border business issues.
