How do you feel the pandemic has changed the world of work for in-house counsel and the function of the general counsel?
COVID has, and will continue to have, a major impact on the role of a general counsel. I believe that the most significant is that out of necessity at the time, the role of a general counsel became ever so more important, particularly in assisting on several ‘non-legal’ issues that the business faced. My role has become more challenging, more dynamic, and even more engaged with senior management and the board on business strategy and direction.
Looking forward, what technological advancements do you feel will impact the role of in-house legal teams in the future the most?
I believe the most important impact technology will have on the role of in-house legal teams is to drive further efficiencies in processes, that will in turn allow lawyers to focus on their actual legal work rather than administration or document management. Technology will continue to allow for greater sharing of information in real time, including between lawyers and their clients and stakeholders.
