Lafarge Egypt
Operating as a subsidiary of Lafarge S.A., Lafarge Egypt is a leading producer of building materials in North Africa. The legal department, led by general counsel Ahmed Barakat, is part of the executive committee and is heavily involved in the decision making process. In close contact with the executive committee and CEO, Barakat and his team are able to drive business strategy forward and facilitate the company’s desired routes to growth.
The team is credited for the recent introduction of innovative systems serving litigation and contracts, as well as the creation of manuals for the corporate “Code of Business Conduct and Competition Law”. In addition, the team is praised for handling two prominent transactions, namely a clay tax case amounting to EGP 560m and a gas claim amounting to EGP 156m. In the period following the Egyptian revolution of 2011, Lafarge Egypt’s legal department was one of the company’s main instruments to handle the resulting challenges and navigate the company through a period of unprecedented instability.
