How do you feel the pandemic has changed the world of work for in-house counsel and the function of the general counsel?
The pandemic increased the strategic role of the legal department; especially for listed companies, given their large seizes. It has become necessary to develop extensive knowledge and understanding of the legal environment, to make decisions in complex times. The general counsel must be prepared to take on an excellence role and make the difference for its corporation, making the right choices at the right time.
What are the most significant cases or transactions that your legal team has recently been involved in?
The most significant transaction was securing funds from the Italian government to overcome the damage brought by the pandemic. OVS was the first Italian listed company able to obtain such financial aid. The OVS legal team has also been involved in the acquisition of a distressed company. We engaged in finding solutions aimed at maintaining and increasing the level of employment despite the scenario caused by the pandemic. Additionally, we engaged in dialogue with the Italian government to explain the needs of retail companies, providing suggestion on how to respond and manage the crisis created by pandemic.
How do you suggest in-house lawyers build strong relationships with business partners?
According to my experience there are three main advice that I can provide – to deeply understand the business and the company’s objectives. Build and cultivate relationships every day with business partners – dialogue is crucial to provide legal tailored advice that can make a real difference. Lastly, motivation and a sense of belonging to the company you are working for is particularly important.
