Antonella Fachin started her professional career in the parent company of Bracco Imaging, the lead company in the Bracco Group’s core business of diagnostic imaging, as an in-house legal counsel engaged to coordinate legal activities and initiatives within the industrial associations of which Bracco was a member. Her support extended to the oversight of drafting of proposals and position papers on the legislative initiatives first at national and then at European level, in compliance with the strategies and guidelines established by the company and relevant associations. Afterwards, she switched her professional role to focus on the company’s legal business and, parallel to the growth of Bracco Imaging as an international life sciences group, she became head of the legal department in 2002 and then, in 2007, director within the global legal affairs department for the areas of commercial, marketing, medical and regulatory affairs. The development of cross-functional integration and process empowerment with colleagues of Bracco Imaging, its subsidiaries, and results-focused orientation has allowed Fachin to win the 2015 and the 2016 internal award of the global commercial operations department for outstanding contribution and “excellent support and collaboration with regional teams.” Due to her professional experience in the field, relationships with associations and deep knowledge of the activities and interests of the company departments – which span R&D, technical operations, health and safety, medical and regulatory, marketing, and commercial – Fachin has the capability to lead legal operations. She has the expertise to deliver on the complexity of legal businesses with a systemic approach for the benefit of the company whose main products are sold in over 100 countries, both directly and indirectly through subsidiaries, joint ventures and distributors. Fachin has been instrumental in modernising the legal department changing the approach from a “classic” provider of legal services on request to a “modern” proactive department able to define legal strategies and support the business. She explains that this is ‘in order to ensure that the company and group objectives are reached in a timely and effective manner, in compliance with laws and regulations and the applicable codes of conduct’. This change in approach centres on managing contracts by drafting the company contractual templates and defining internal guidelines and procedures on the internal process flows for the negotiation, approval and execution of contracts. She adds that it also ‘fostered the collaboration between company departments, according to standardised working methods and legal documents, and I could see the increasingly high level of influence [that] the global legal affairs department had within the organisation’.
