Over the last few years the legal team at ABB has grown more closely aligned with the business in terms of becoming simpler, more flexible, accessible and streamlined. Examples of this include implementing a new online system for booking orders and closing agreements that complement the company’s worldwide move into digital. In addition, the team has contributed by regularly attending customer visits to negotiate contracts or provide presentations, this way fulfilling its role as a general practitioner who advises the business on ‘all possible legal and compliance issues whether they be contractual, corporate, employment related, integrity related’.

The department has also worked on contracts for landmark renewable energy projects, including a contract covering the installation of solar panels on ABB’s office rooftop. To enable ABB to gain access to new markets, the team has also completed an abundance of acquisitions of multinational company divisions. The team is led by general counsel Thomas Högfors, who stands out with his ‘practical approach’ and ‘ability to simplify complex commercial issues’ – according to legal counsel and colleague Asim Habib – in a front-line role that requires him to take strategic decisions to ensure that ABB is prospering and protected.

Since his introduction to the team Habib has also made vital contributions to the business, thanks to his involvement in several high profile acquisitions and renewable energy projects and has impressed colleagues with ‘his outstanding approach to customer and client care’. Ramy Saleh, legal counsel for the robotics and motion division of ABB, is another exceptional lawyer within the team who has been described by clients as ‘very efficient, flexible and client-focused’.
