Bain Capital’s Asia general counsel Melissa Obegi runs an Asia-based legal team consisting of two lawyers, two compliance personnel and two lawyers in affiliated entities. The team is responsible for managing legal and compliance issues for the investment firm’s Asian private equity and credit strategies. In the last year, the team has transformed and grown to support new areas of business. Obegi identifies that ‘we have added personnel to support the growth in our strategies, including our distressed and special situations strategy in Asia, and the expansion of our private equity strategy to new markets’. In the last two years the team has been involved in many projects and transactions in both its private equity and credit functions. In terms of private equity, its transactions include control transactions in Japan, Korea, China and Australia, significant minority investments in India and China, and public market and trade sale exits. In its credit function, the team has worked on the acquisition and resolution of non-performing or stressed loan portfolios across Asia, including China, Thailand, India, Australia, as well as bilateral special situation investments. Obegi describes the success of the team as having a ‘solution-oriented legal team that partners with high-performance business teams to make exceptional investments with lasting impact’.
