Harvard-educated Nkateko Nyoka oversees the legal and regulatory functions at Vodacom, the leading cellular network in South Africa with an estimated 58% share of the local market and over 23 million customers.
Appointed to the executive committee of the company in November 2010, Nyoka has assisted the expansion of Vodacom’s mobile network to Tanzania, Democratic Republic of Congo, Mozambique and Lesotho. Besides his extensive legal knowledge and managerial expertise acquired over the course of several decades, sources point out Nyoka’s deep expertise in securing key deals and drafting comprehensive documents that have helped the company cement its position in both key and peripheral markets.
Prior to joining Vodacom, Nyoka held several positions at MTN, another leading South African telecommunications company. This included a role as group executive for corporate services where he led the legal, regulatory and corporate secretarial functions. Nyoka’s former positions also feature a CEO role of the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa and an active chief executive position at the Department of Water Affairs of South Africa.
