General counsel Chile and compliance officer Latam | ALSTOM
Focus on significance of compliance enforcement
As general counsel, I deal with all sorts of legal matters that may arise in the company. From the review of all documents engaging the company, particularly legal support at all stages of business activities and operations from tender stage to project execution, legal support to procurement activities and transactions with suppliers and subcontractors, to corporate governance including administration, legal support on company law and mergers and acquisitions. Also, support in litigations whether court proceedings or arbitration, except when related to social and labor law, and legal matters which are directly handled by the human resources department. I also focus on the set-up and deployment of legal trainings and awareness programs to different areas of the company (non-lawyers).
However, my recent additional role as compliance officer of LAM region has been an interesting path in my legal career as it implies adding value to the company. It deals not only with anti-bribery and anti-corruption systems but with important values such as diversity, inclusion, no discrimination, and better work environments. As ethics & compliance officer, I deal with the implementation and promotion in this region of a strong culture of compliance and integrity, including on competition and antitrust matters through our code of ethics, and the awareness and compliance with the companies’ legal instructions and policies. This role includes a strong support, and advances business goals by providing compliance-related business advise, along with anticipating risks and ensuring that the full compliance program is known, understood and operated in the respective area of responsibility, Additionally, the regional promotion of the compliance system, which covers recognized compliance domains such as anti-corruption, export control, data privacy, third party evaluation, and several training programs.
