Having been recognised by various legal publications, industry awards and having articles published in prominent industry press, Madeleine Truter is a truly influential and distinguished figure in South Africa’s in-house legal community.

In January 2017, Truter was appointed general counsel of Setso Property Fund, a company established by her previous employers (Pivotal Fund, a JSE-listed investment fund) as part of its broader empowerment strategy to develop a fully independent majority black owned fund. Setso Property Fund now has a diversified R1.4bn property portfolio comprising of commercial and retail assets across Gauteng and the Western Cape.

Whilst general counsel for Pivotal Fund between July 2015 and December 2016, Truter advised her employers on the establishment of Setso Property Fund as well as other landmark company activities such as the acquisition of a shareholding in Echo Prime Properties in Poland, the acquisition of a 37% shareholding in the P-grade Wings Office Complex in Nigeria for an initial investment of $51m and the listing of a dedicated holding vehicle, Mara Diversified Property Holdings, on the Mauritius Stock Exchange. Prior to Setso and Pivotal, Truter built formidable in-house legal career from 1999 onwards in senior legal positions at other large African corporations such as Nedbank, Khula Enterprise Finance, Pangbourne Properties, Redefine Properties and finally Growthpoint Properties where she was head of the legal department and general counsel from 2008 until 2015.
