Multinational Total E&P Norge is an oil and gas exploration and production company based on the Norwegian continental shelf. It holds exploration licenses in the North Sea, the Norwegian Sea, and the Barents Sea.The company’s history in Norway started in 1965, but it was the merger of Total, Fina and Elf in 1999 which made Total E&P Norge one of the biggest and strongest players in Norway. Today, Total E&P Norge participates in 89 licenses throughout the entire Norwegian Continental Shelf. It is the operator of 34 licenses and in 2016, the company’s average production was 235,000 barrels of oil equivalents per day. The company has over 400 employees, including 80 expatriated staff and 22 that are assigned abroad or at partners in Norway. These figures are a testament to the company’s professionals, not least its legal team, where Arild Kvanvik Jørgensen has undertaken the role of legal manager of Total E&P Norge since 2010. A function that is known withn the market for being business-enablers, in November 2017 – with counsel from the legal team – Total agreed to sell all of its interests in the Martin Linge field and Garantiana discovery on the Norwegian Continental Shelf to Statoil, as well as sign an agreement with Shell and Statoil to mature the development of a full scale carbon storage on the Norwegian continental shelf. This is in line with the company’s business objectives where it seeks to develop carbon capture utilisation and storage to achieve its low carbon strategy, and is another testament to the abilities of the legal team to ensure the deal could be completed.
