Norges Bank, the central bank of Norway, provides services for the economic stability of Norway by regulating monetary policy and is responsible for the organisation of robust and efficient payment systems, financial markets, exchange reserves and the Government Pension Fund Global in coordination with the Ministry of Finance. The legal department at Norges Bank assists with legal advice to all parts of the central bank’s activities, with particularly regarding legislation and payment and settlement systems, financial instruments and asset management, banknotes and coins and own management at the bank. Marius Ryel is the Bank’s executive director and general counsel and is ultimately responsible for providing all legal advice to the board and management of the Bank, particularly in relation to Norway’s European Economic Area requirements and other elements of international financial law. He leads a team of specialist lawyers adept at handling different elements of the legal affairs of the Bank and support the governance risk and compliance team as well as all other function areas of the Bank.
