What are the most significant cases and transactions that your legal team has recently been involved in?
In 2022, our team has been focused on growth. We have launched a new distribution arm in Germany (subject to regulatory approval) and supported the business in delivering a record year of financial results in 2021, among many other projects which are not yet in the public domain.
How important is choosing to work with external lawyers who align with your company’s values? Are you likely to reconsider what firms you work with based on this?
I think it is very important for the firms we work with to be aligned to our values – notably with respect to diversity, equity and inclusion. When we established our law firm panel, we evaluated the firms on several criteria including diversity, equality and inclusion and we continue to monitor this in the law firms we work with.
As we enter the next decade, what skills will a corporate legal team need to succeed in the modern in-house legal world?
I believe corporate legal teams need to view themselves as true business partners.In-house lawyers need to be curious with a passion to understand the business. This will then ensure they are better positioned to advise and support on delivery of the strategy.
How do you suggest in-house lawyers build strong relationships with business partners?
A genuine interest in the company’s products and services is critical. Curiosity and an interest in the business goes a long way to making sure you are “in the room”. Being viewed as an integral member of the team, rather than just wearing the legal hat, will ensure you are positioned to provide timely advice and support. And, in my opinion, being part of the business is the best thing about being in-house.
