Henry Leong Wye Khong
General counsel, Asia Pacific | GE Gas Power
What are the most significant cases or transactions that your legal team has recently been involved in?
The team works on a range of highly complex and high value power generation projects across some of the most challenging jurisdictions and landscapes in the world. The work includes a range of legal skills and support required in structuring successful deals and service offerings, ensuring seamless manufacturing supply chains and repairs, long term operations and maintenance, regulatory compliance and navigating complex product issues and disputes over a range of jurisdictions with a view of supporting the growth of the business in a sustainable manner while enhancing the reputation of the business over the decades to come.
Did the pandemic lead to a lasting increase in the interaction your legal team has with the strategic plans of the company?
While any crisis and unexpected events are never wished for, and there have been several over the last 3 years, these present significant opportunities for the legal team to be intimately involved at all levels of the company. Every legal team, including ours, spent a considerable amount of time with our teams from various functions impacted by these unexpected events to determine strategic plans and options to execute them. These functions range from supply chain, government affairs, sales, project execution just to name a few.
How important is choosing to work with external lawyers who align with your company’s values? Are you likely to reconsider what firms you work with based on this?
Absolutely important. Every opportunity for us to engage external lawyers are typically complex and involve high stakes. We would not want to have to question whether our external lawyers share our values at any time throughout the engagement.
As we enter the next decade, what skills will a corporate legal team need to succeed in the modern in-house industry?
Embracing and getting the best out of a diverse team is one of them, especially in the APAC region. As the business and our markets continue to develop, legal teams must have a diverse slate of talent that are able to respond quickly and appropriately to fast changing circumstances in individual markets that we operate in.
