Could you tell us a bit about your significant successes in your role?

I am responsible for supporting complex and strategic commercial IT transactions for the provision of high-performance hardware, software, cloud computing, blockchain and consulting agreements, among others with some of the most important financial institutions in Mexico, as well as with the largest business partners in the country. Also, as part of my biggest professional successes, I was part of the team that led the corporate restructure of various companies within IBM’s group and advised the executive team on the implementation of diverse actions to ensure compliance with Mexican labour and tax reforms throughout 2021 and align with new IBM’s business model.

In addition, I contributed actively on the spin-off of a very important portion of the company which ended up in the incorporation of a new infrastructure services company, which was recognized with the IBM Growth Award 2022. Also, I have recently been appointed as responsible for human resources matters, working with different teams to improve HR processes and controls within IBM to avoid legal risks. Lastly, I have dedicated a big part of my time to train and support other members of the legal department to strengthen our position as gate keepers and accountable contributors within the company.

What is the biggest risk to your industry organisation and how are you contributing to prepare your organisation for this?

The biggest risks to IT industry have become security incidents and breaches, as well as the correct management, use and storage of our client’s sensitive personal information. As technological services have become essential to companies throughout the world, to contribute with our organization, our duty as IT lawyers has become to work hand in hand with our technical teams and information security officers, to ensure compliance of information security rulings and laws, as well as to advise and educate our commercial and technical teams on how to treat sensitive personal information. Another very important aspect for IT lawyers, in the short term, is to become better trained on IT services and technical aspects, and more skilled in the use of technology to become more efficient in our job roles and to better understand the business and technical needs of our business partners and external clients.
