Pilar Perez has been part of the Lorentzen Group for 15 years. For over 60 years the Lorentzen Group has invested in shipping and logistics, biomass, among other investments. In 2009, the group created Lorinvest Gestão de Recursos (Lorinvest) – an asset management company registered at CVM, Brazil’s Securities and Exchange Commission. Throughout the process of building Lorinvest, Perez has been responsible for several pivotal roles that aim at ensuring compliance with ethics, corporate governance, labour law, business and capital markets requirements. As a legal compliance manager Perez is responsible for capital market issues at Lorinvest and for the corporate matters of the invested companies and the overall running of the legal department, human resources, corporate ethics and compliance. Currently Perez is improving the training and dissemination of Lorinvest’s Code of Ethics and Business Conduct by bringing to the table debates among the Lorinvest team on real worldwide corruption case studies and their outcomes which can be translated into best practice. Perez has also created a compliance team with employees from various companies of the Lorentzen Group such as Companhia de Navegação Norsul, New Steel, Norflor Empreendimentos Agrícolas and Target Meio de Pagamentos which allows the whole group to exchange experiences and ideas. ‘At the current juncture, with so many companies [in Brazil] involved in corruption and money laundering scandals, the efforts to strengthen our ethical values and to reinforce our principles are of utmost importance. Therefore, by training the whole team, discussing best practices and asking suppliers and stakeholders to adhere to our Code of Ethics and Business Conduct, I believe I will help to avoid or mitigate relevant risks and also drive the organisation toward its goals’. Perez has been involved in M&A transactions, arbitrations and litigations and one of the most important transactions was related to the sale of part of Lorinvest’s forestry invested company. Perez has been instrumental in changing and forming opinions within the Lorentzen Group and has been helping to drive the legal business forward.
