What has been the number one challenge that has impacted you over the past year?
Adjusting to the new normal post-pandemic has required developing an approach to work that works for individuals but, critically, also works for the business. As we navigate this phase, the value of sharing a physical space to collaborate, share knowledge, and build strong relationships have been evident. Cybersecurity and data protection has also been a key focus over the last 12 months.
Looking forward, what technological advancements do you feel will impact the role of in-house legal teams in the future the most?
I think it is clear that the rapid development of AI will have the most significant impact on in-house legal teams. Improved access to data and the continued automation of low-value tasks will allow the in-house team to focus on where they most add value. This is a win-win situation for lawyers and the broader business they serve.
What would you say are the unique qualities required to be successful as an in-house lawyer in your industry?
To succeed as an in-house lawyer in the real estate funds management sector, you need legal skills across a broad range of areas. The legal issues encountered at a fully integrated property investment and funds management group such as Charter Hall are diverse. In addition to the “business as usual” legal advice required for any large listed corporate, we deal with equity capital raisings — across the full spectrum of capital sources — debt, real estate acquisitions and disposals, corporate M&A, tax, leasing, and development. The overlay of everchanging financial services regulation necessitates a commitment to continued learning and professional development.
