What has been the number one challenge that has impacted you over the past year?
Staying updated on evolving commercial and financial service laws in multiple countries has been a challenge. I have to consider common law, takaful and sharia laws in blended and standalone jurisdictions which is both wonderful and thought provoking, However, this challenge is enhanced by the fast-changing geopolitical and economic environments of the countries we operate, and the rules that apply to each country – such as currency exchanges restrictions, sanctions, data security and know your client requirements.
Looking forward, what technological advancements do you feel will impact the role of in-house legal teams in the future the most?
One technological advancement that will have a significant impact on in-house legal service providers will be the developments in AI. While the provision of legal advice still requires independent, technically robust and commercially practical advice, in-house lawyers need to ensure that the advice provided is their own work. They also need to be able to face internal challenges from people who now see the web as a viable, reliable source of expert legal advice. Although AI legal advice is usually accurate, it does not replace experience.
What would you say are the unique qualities required to be successful as an in-house lawyer in your industry?
Lawyers or in-house lawyers – particularly in the financial services industry – are not commonly viewed as compassionate or empathetic. In-house teams are usually required to be good listeners, agile, technically accurate, commercially savvy and problem solvers. These are basic qualities of good in-house counsel. We do not need egos; we need kind and compassionate people who are able to show empathy for our clients, our people and their needs – both collective and personal.
