Spotlight on Kara McGowan

Kara McGowan was appointed Sigma Healthcare’s general counsel and company secretary in October 2021. Sigma Healthcare is an ASX listed pharmacy wholesale and distribution business. The company is also the franchisor for over 500 stores, operating under well-known brands including Amcal, Guardian Pharmacy and Discount Drug Store.

Prior to joining Sigma, Kate was general counsel and company secretary at Transdev, an international public transport operator where she was responsible for the provision of legal advice for all operations in Australia and New Zealand including Sydney Harbour Ferries, Wellington and Auckland metro rail and Sydney Light Rail. Over the years she has held a variety of legal and commercial roles including company solicitor – Kmart and head of joint ventures for Australian Unity Investments. She began her legal career at Clayton Utz as a competition lawyer.

Kate has been a company secretary for over 15 years for a broad range of corporate structures and businesses. Kate is admitted as a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court of Victoria, holds a Graduate Diploma of Applied Corporate Governance and is a Graduate and Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
