About

Following the success of Argentina’s pro-business Cambiemos coalition in 2015 a number of prominent corporate figures have made the transition to government departments. As part of this process, a flurry of lawyers have moved from leading law firms and large corporates to public sector positions. In February 2016, José Ignacio García Hamilton, son of the famous Argentinian writer and politician of the same name, left his position as director of legal at Carrefour to join the Ministry of Commerce as head of legal and institutional relations. He is now responsible for overseeing relations between various governmental chambers, companies and other organisations to help boost trade and growth. As part of this, he has also been involved in some of the ministry’s most important recent initiatives. The Ministry of Commerce announced last year that it would reintroduce and expand price protections programmes, fixing prices for essential goods and helping to control inflation. He had previously spent nearly nine years as legal director at Carrefour following five years at law firm Marval, O’Farrell & Mairal.
