Fairfax Media
Founded in 1841, Fairfax Media is today one of Australia and New Zealand’s largest media companies with output and investments in the newspaper, magazines, radio and internet industries. Headed by distinguished group general counsel and company secretary Gail Hambly, the legal team at Fairfax is brimming with talent. At the company’s Sydney office Hambly is ably supported by senior legal counsels Penny Karvouniaris, Lauren Rose, Catriona McGregor, Alethea Lee and Linda Gough whilst corporate counsel Kerrie-Lee Magill and legal counsel Josephine Norris handle legal work from Fairfax’s New Zealand base. Since 2014 team members have been involved in a number of deals to help the company achieve its goals, for instance the legal team was involved in the founding of online streaming company Stan in a joint venture with Nine Entertainment Co. In a similar vein, team members played a significant role in overseeing Fairfax’s merger with Macquarie Radio Network, a significant development for the Fairfax which require it to sell its interest in 96FM Perth to Australian Radio Network in order to comply with domestic competition law. In efforts to boost the company’s involvement in the news industry the Fairfax Media legal team oversaw negotiations with Huffington Post over a partnership to launch HuffPost Australia.
