Shell Australia
Shell Australia is the Australian subsidiary of Royal Dutch Shell and has operated in Australia since 1901, initially delivering bulk fuel into Australia, then later establishing storage and distribution terminals, oil refineries and a network of service stations. Over the years Shell’s Australian activities have extended to oil exploration, petrochemicals and coal mining, becoming a leading partner in Australia’s resource development project, the North West Shelf venture. The legal team is made up of determined individuals who possess a wide range of in-depth corporate governance and commercial knowledge in the oil and energy sector. Most recently, Shell Australia took a $14bn USD gas gamble by building the world’s biggest floating structure, which is considered an important part of Royal Dutch Shell’s strategy for retaining its position as the world’s largest independent producer of liquefied natural gas. The floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) facility arrived in Australia in mid-2017 to begin commissioning following its construction by Samsung Heavy Industries in South Korea. The Shell Australia legal team has been tasked with negotiating this agreement and providing legal services in relation to inter-jurisdictional regulation within Asian markets. Ensuring environmental compliance, the legal department has promoted a lower environmental impact than onshore plants, which has overall reduced costs for the company.
