The United States multinational office supply retailing company Staples has been established in the region since 2004, and the Australia and New Zealand subsidiaries currently account for over $1bn USD of the company’s worldwide revenue. Head of legal and company secretary Troy Swan, who joined Staples in 2012, managed the transition from Corporate Express to Staples, following Staples’ acquisition of the division in 2011. He is highly active within the Australian business and legal community and was profiled in the GC Powerlist: Australia and New Zealand in 2016. Legal counsel Nektaria Vasilopoulos has over 20 years’ experience in the legal industry and is responsible for assisting Swan and relevant business stakeholders in the management of legal issues in Australia and New Zealand including Staples’ subsidiaries. Legal counsel Cecilia Wang was recruited in 2014 after demonstrating skills in advising on a range of corporate transactions, business structuring and corporate governance matters whilst at Mattila Lawyers between 2011 and 2013. In a highly significant development for Staples Australia and New Zealand, the team played a crucial role in overseeing the acquisition of the company by Platinum Equity in March 2017 and possessing an expert skillset they are set to play another important role in helping the company to rebrand under the name “Winc”.
