Senior legal counsel | Liberty Seguros
Could you tell us a bit about your significant successes in your role?
I provide daily support to the various teams that make up the company, from issues of opinions to the clarification of questions relating to the interpretation of the law, among others. I also collaborate on several projects the company has underway, providing all the necessary support from a legal perspective. In my day-to-day functions, there is also a lot of drafting and reviewing agreements, contracts, and other legal documents to ensure the company’s full legal rights.
It is essential to maintain a current knowledge of changes in legislation and new regulations, so I am always working to be updated. I also evaluate different risk factors regarding business decisions and operations and issue recommendations based on the analysis performed.
In your opinion, what are the qualities and skills needed to form a strong legal team?
To have a strong legal team there needs to be good communication, opinion sharing, and teamwork. Proactivity, responsibility and conflict resolution skills should also be valued. Additionally, organisational skills are extremely important, as well as the ability to prioritise the most urgent and time-sensitive tasks over others.
Finally, being able to maintain a balance between professional and personal life is a relevant skill to possess.
What is the biggest risk to your industry and how are you contributing to prepare your organisation for this?
I believe that the main goal of the insurance industry is to be, continuously, compliant with the applicable legislation. On this basis, I consider the biggest risk to the sector to be failure to comply with the law. This is a heightened risk as we are regularly confronted with the publication of new laws, recommendations from the regulatory authority and several other legal requirements and obligations.
In this context, and as senior legal counsel, I try to ensure that the company fulfils legal requirements. My team and I advise the business on the best way to proceed, doing things right.
What challenges have you overcome to get to the position you are in today?
I was privileged to have had several professional experiences, firstly, because I had the opportunity to join different work teams in different entities, namely law firms and other companies. And, secondly, because I have worked in various areas; consumer law, real estate law and insurance law, providing consulting services and litigation.
I believe that the main challenges I faced were learning to work in a team; prioritising communication with colleagues, managers and clients; being patient and resilient; and having the ability to stay calm under pressure.
