GC to Australia’s second largest telecommunications company for 13 years, Jenny Rees has seen Optus double in size, with its legal function tripling to 40 members. The very nature of her position has made her central to the opening up of Australia’s market, and sources measure her successes in regulatory and commercial landmarks. To support the business during this historic period, Rees has integrated legal teams of three wholly-owned subsidiaries into one centralised Australian legal function, dividing the team into specialised segments and establishing comprehensive processes. ‘The nature of our business and industry means that things never stand still’, she says. ‘We are always having to ensure that we keep on top of legal and market developments and are involved in ground-breaking work from a legal perspective’. The Optus legal team has led several transactions related to Australia’s introduction of national broadband networks over the past seven years, including several of strategic significance. ‘Some of these have challenged the market structure and others have tested legal boundaries in areas like the application of copyright to new forms of services’, Rees says. ‘Even in circumstances where Optus is not successful, the team’s work is critical in supporting the business’ “challenger” brand.  There is never a dull moment and the team always rises to the challenge!’ Rees is quick to point to the strength of the individuals within her function, and their substantial role in Optus’ success.
