What has been the number one challenge that has impacted you over the past year?
The number one challenge that has impacted our company during the past year was to keep the operation going despite the crisis that Peru faced. It has been a journey full of learning opportunities but despite all, it gave us the opportunity to reinvent ourselves; we were able to enter new markets, broaden our portfolio, and were able to implement new sustainability programs. It helped us to learn to think outside of the box and see how we can provide better and new products and services to our customers while mapping and mitigating risks.
Looking forward, what technological advancements do you feel will impact the role of in-house legal teams in the future the most?
I think that legal departments are a fundamental part of companies since we give support to all areas of the company, and due to this, being agile and having open and quick communication is important. In addition to the possibility of reducing costs related to face-to-face meetings by using technology, legal teams must rely on technological tools to give better advice and reduce business needs. Legal departments must implement and develop technology, for instance, artificial intelligence and deep data analysis, that reduce time and help lawyers give better counselling.
What is a cause, business related or otherwise, that you care about, and why?
A cause that I care about is environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG). I consider it very important to reduce our carbon footprint impact and to promote and create volunteering programs because it promotes innovation and resilience by exploring new models of doing business. As part of CBC, we teach this, and from a legal perspective, we assumed the challenge to create a legal structure that allows us to implement this goal. In this sense, we have signed agreements with public and private entities to implement this structure and to give a boost to these programs, especially to the people that recycle. We have created an incentive where people obtain points and then exchange them for products in many supermarkets around the country.
