What has been the number one challenge that has impacted you over the past year?

The emerging risks, commercial practices, and market realities associated with the insurance industry, and risk management consulting services, are evolving faster than regulations in Latin America. The pandemic accelerated the way business was developed and demonstrated the need for integration of multinational legal teams to share operational, commercial, and regulatory challenges and, at the same time, find joint solutions. The challenge of keeping local regulators aware of market changes, as well as the competition’s conduct, means that business decision-making may suffer some delays as there are gaps in regulation to cover.

Despite these challenges, our team, has adapted to the changes with a shift in their management mindset, worked diligently to maintain our commitment to ethical and legal business practices, while continuing to provide exceptional service to our clients.

Looking forward, what technological advancements do you feel will impact the role of in-house legal teams in the future the most?

Artificial intelligence will greatly assist in the tasks of legal operations, contract review, invoicing, reviews and background checks and more. This will enhance the role of lawyers, who will be able to focus on deploying their legal expertise for their organisations, pursue their goals, and understand the business and act as business partners to organisations. I am confident that this will provide opportunities for different sectors to identify risks and opportunities earlier, making businesses more agile and resilient.

What is a cause, business related or otherwise, that you care about, and why?

Diversity and inclusion are the cause I care most about because it is as basic as being respectful of people, empathising with their realities, views, experiences and contributing to day-to-day interactions. It is important to promote honest conversations and interactions where people can feel included, safe and genuine, this is the only way to unleash a person’s full potential and talent.
